Our journey up Mt. Rainier for the 2010 Cops on Top Summit for Heroes can be followed by clicking on the following link. The link will take you to my SPOT tracker page, where you can see our progression up the mountain.

To see our altitude on the mountain: When the link is clicked a map will pop up; click on the "terrain" button in the upper right corner and an overhead view with terrain markers will show up. For other views, click on Satellite or hybrid maps.

Our plan is to leave the parking lot and climb to about 10,000 feet on June 24th. We plan to do some crevasse rescue training on the 25th at altitude, and then leave between midnight and 1AM for our summit attempt on the morning of the 26th.

With frequent recent storms that have dumped multiple feet of new snow, Mt. Rainier currently has some bad avalanche conditions. In looking at predicted weather, Rainier is supposed to have good weather for most of next week, with another storm rolling in on the 26th (summit day). If this proves true, we may play it safe and avoid getting stuck in a storm up on the mountain by making a summit attempt on Friday the 25th. So, if you would like to follow our travels to the summit, check the link on Friday and Saturday.

I'm pretty new to the site and climbing in general. This site is great and I am starting to get to know some of you. Gotta thank Troy Bacon for his help so far! I'm extremely interested and am starting my climbing career but could use some advice from you experienced climbers. What I need is an idea of a basic gear list I should acquire for my upcoming hikes this year to Mt. Whitney and hopefully Boundary Peak. Next year I'm planning on attempting Mt. Hood and maybe even Mt. Rainier. My ultimate goal is Everest with this group in a few years.

I live in San Diego and was also wondering if there are any Southern California climbers that I can hook up with to do some local climbs and learn from. I certainly don't mind traveling to up my skills and get to know some of the members.

I'm doing my part now to put the word out about Cops on Top and will be an active member in my newfound passion.

I appreciate any and all help / advice!

As most of you know, Cops on Top has set the 2010 Summit for Heroes for June 26th. In speaking with Troy Bacon I’ve learned that Mt. Rainier has not had any summit attempts for the last few years during the Summit for Heroes event. This year I would like to change that, especially with the tragic loss of six Seattle area officers in the latter part of 2009. So, I’m looking for interested parties to join me.

When I first began thinking about a Rainier attempt to coincide with the Summit for Heroes event, I was thinking I would go back up the mountain with RMI, mainly because I don’t have any guiding experience. I exchanged some E-mails with Troy and he suggested I post on the website to look for other members to join me, because there are some very qualified people out there. He also told me there has been a lot of recent interest for a Rainier summit.

As I mentioned, I don’t have any guiding experience so I would like to find somebody who does.

I would really enjoy being able to build a team for this event and look forward to hearing from anybody with ideas, or who are interested in joining me.

Take care and be safe,

Ryan

As of now, plans are still being worked out, but the tentative start date is May 3rd, 2010, which means we will be on the mountain during National Police Week. The expedition itinerary can be located (here).

An expedition such as this requires team members not only to be in shape (physically and mentally) but posses a certain knowledge about mountaineering as well as being able to work and live together for weeks in cramped confined spaces (tents)...and lets not forget the COLD. We will be climbing the West Buttress Route.

We would like to have a team formed by January 1st so we can proceed with permits and other group arrangements.

Asolo has been helping Cops on Top and its members for many years. I was introduced to Asolo about 5 years ago when I purchased a pair of AFS 8000 plastic boots. I have to say, they have been great for me on major mountains and cold/snowy expeditions!

I encourage Cops on Top members to take full advantage of Asolo's offer!

Not a Cops on Top member? Check out Asolo (here).

Yesterday, a jury took 90 minutes to convict Reese for attempted murder, resisting law enforcement, and carrying a handgun without a license.

Officer Fishburn still works for the Indy Metro PD in a limited capacity.

Reese could face up to 59 years in prison.

Congratulations to the Officer Fishburn and his family...justice served!

Chuck or I could not find any survey marker but there is a very nice granite carved stone signifying Taum Sauk Mountain as the highest point in Missouri. We also made the hike to the Mina Suak Falls that is very close to the high point. With all the rain, the falls were raging!

The next day, we visited Sam Baker State park and hiked on/around Mudlick Mountain. There is a little more "challenge" to the hike than on Taum Sauk. The trails were well marked and there are three (that we saw) shelters to sleep in. I was disappointed not to have seen a feral hog running around, but we did see a small turtle and some deer running around.

The picture to the left is what I call "March of the Fungi" It looks like all the fungi are standing at attenition waiting for instructions...probably to start eating the decaying log. This picture was taken on the Mudlick Trail in the Sam Baker State Park.
