    Mountain or Marathon?

While climbing off the steep slopes of Mount Rainier in 2006 with my great friends Chuck and Perry (after a successful summit) I over heard another climber (that was not climbing with us) say he would have rather run a marathon than climb Mount Rainier again. Recently, I was a member of the 2009 Cops on Top Sgt. Liczbinski Aconcagua memorial expedition. There too, I overheard someone at Plaza Argentina (Base Camp) say he would rather run a marathon than climb Aconcagua again. Well, I thought...why not! I signed up for the Indianapolis Mini-Marathon and will be running on May 2nd, 2009, with some of my LEO friends. I thought I would see (for myself) what is tougher...running or climbing. I will let you all know how it goes.

Okay, I know that I only chose a mini and not a real full length marathon, but I did run all 13.1 miles without stopping and did come to the conclusion that you really can not compare the two (in my opinion) because one is flat and the other verticle (and has altitude involved). At mile 11, I would have to say my legs were hurting like they did around 21,000 feet.

So, as far as I am concerned...you can't compare the two (directly) and both types of ATHELETS that climb and run should be commended and are both ENDORANCE activities.

I am ready to climb something! Can't wait until Summit for Heroes!

Okay...me personally although I have never run a marathon....would rather hike and climb for weeks than run for a half day.  I do agree with you that they are very different and the athletes themselves are very different...If you look at world class runners they tend to be smaller, lean, and pure muscles....I think you need a little more body fat to do well at high altitudes....but having said that the marathon stlye body would climb rock like a monkey on say...El Cap.  so it must be a matter of what you climb and your state of mind at the time...for sure a big part of running and climbing are pure mental.....an interesting debate...we can continue it on our next adventure...

I to am looking forward to the summit for heroes...stay safe buddy

Yes, both climbing and running are mental and what you are willing to put your body through. Well said.

    Be safe, Steve!

I have heard the same types of comments. Having been a long term runner and climber I can see both sides and would say that you have to be a little "mental" for both.
