    Recommended Gear

Hello All, I'm pretty new to the site and climbing in general. This site is great and I am starting to get to know some of you. Gotta thank Troy Bacon for his help so far! I'm extremely interested and am starting my climbing career but could use some advice from you experienced climbers. What I need is an idea of a basic gear list I should acquire for my upcoming hikes this year to Mt. Whitney and hopefully Boundary Peak. Next year I'm planning on attempting Mt. Hood and maybe even Mt. Rainier. My ultimate goal is Everest with this group in a few years. I live in San Diego and was also wondering if there are any Southern California climbers that I can hook up with to do some local climbs and learn from. I certainly don't mind traveling to up my skills and get to know some of the members. I'm doing my part now to put the word out about Cops on Top and will be an active member in my newfound passion. I appreciate any and all help / advice! Ofc. Jeff Rabine SDCCPD - CRT/FTU jdrabine@gmail.com

    Jeff,

I love your excitement! As for the gear, each of the mountains you listed are awesome, but some of them have routes that require differant gear and equipment. Can you be more specific? Send me an email and I will see what I can do.

    Be safe,

    Troy

    Re: Recommended Gear

     Jeff,

As Troy said, different mountains require different gear.  As for Mt. Rainier, people have asked me what I took up the mountain with me last year; I've guided each of them to the Rainier Mountaineering Inc. (RMI) rmiguides.com website, they have an excellent gear list put together that they reccommend for each of their climbs.  Here's a the web address to their gear list I used,

    http://www.rmiguides.com/rainier/?id=8#equipment

As for the items on the list, I printed the list out and took it to the store with me and would try the items on to make sure they fit right, and to see if they were warm enough.  Then, instead of paying retail for everything, I went to a website called Spadout.com and entered the item into their search engine; I saved an enormous amount of money on gear.  If you have the time to wait for the shipping before your next trip, it's definitely the way to go.

I have a Whitney gear list that I created when I took some friends up in September; I'll E-mail it to you.

    Take care and be safe,

    Ryan Hunt

Ryan, Thanks again brother! Between you and Troy I am much better off and now gear shopping. It is certainly easier to shop and not waste money on gear that will not work and is not worth buying. I'm have been very fortunate to find the Cops on Top website as everyone's experience and knowledge are such an asset to have and be able to learn from on my end. Thanks again, Jeff
